OUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Global Care’s service-learning initiatives involve both education/advocacy and community service. Below is a list of the highlights of our past and present initiatives.
ETHIOPIAN SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION INITIATIVE
(2007-present)
- Education/Advocacy –
- Keynote address by CNN Top Ten Hero and Ethiopian literacy activist, Yohannes Gebregeorgis
- Numerous educational/fundraising events
- Club presentations at numerous settings in Tenafly and beyond
- Service – Raised $80,000 to sponsor construction of the first 12 rooms of a Pre-K-12 school in Awassa, Ethiopia: “The Ethio-American Friendship School.”
CAMBODIAN HUMANITARIAN INITIATIVE (Fall 2004-2006)
- Education/Advocacy –
- “Global Care Youth Leadership Conference: Eye on Cambodia”
- Youth Ambassador trip to Cambodia
- Club presentations at numerous settings in Tenafly and beyond
- Service – Raised $10,000 to sponsor classes in cultural renewal and education for needy Cambodian children.
SYMPOSIUM ON CAMBODIA AND LANDMINES (Spring 2004)
- Education/Advocacy –
- Keynote address by award-winning human rights activist and survivor of the Khmer Rouge genocide, Arn Chorn-Pond
- Club presentations at numerous settings in Tenafly and beyond
- Service – Raised $11,000 for the rehabilitation of Cambodian landmine survivors.
THE LANDMINE REMOVAL INITIATIVE (2000-2002)
- Education/Advocacy –
- “Global Care Coalition for Mine Action Conference” youth conference
- “Demining With Partners” event to celebrate demining of Podzvizd, Bosnia
- Club presentations at numerous settings in Tenafly and beyond
- Formed Public/Private Partnership with U.S. Department of State
- Service – Raised $40,000 to sponsor demining of two Bosnian villages.
