The Ethiopian School Construction Initiative (2007-present)
Since 2007, the Tenafly Middle School and Demarest Middle School Global Care Clubs have partnered on the Ethiopian School Construction Initiative. Their joint service objective is to sponsor construction of a K-12 school in Awassa, Ethiopia, called the Ethio-American Friendship School. Tenafly High School is slated to join this service partnership in fall 2009. The school’s founder and Global Care’s project partner is Ethiopian literacy advocate and CNN Top Ten Hero, Yohannes Gebregeorgis. To date, Tenafly and Demarest have raised a combined $80,000 to sponsor construction of 12 classrooms.
